Bitumen, also known as asphalt cement, is a sticky, black substance found naturally or as a byproduct of crude oil refining. It’s the key ingredient that binds together the rocks, sand, and gravel in asphalt, the material used for paving roads, parking lots, and other surfaces. Bitumen comes in various grades. These grades reflect the material’s stiffness and are chosen based on factors like climate and intended use. Some grades are softer and more suited for colder climates, while others are harder and better for hot weather or high-traffic areas.
Bitumen emulsion is a liquid version of bitumen made by suspending tiny droplets of bitumen in water with the help of emulsifying agents. This creates a mix that’s easier to transport, store, and apply compared to solid bitumen. Bitumen emulsions come in different grades, each formulated for specific applications. These grades consider factors like setting speed (rapid, medium, slow) and viscosity (thin, thick) to suit tasks like tack coats, waterproofing, or chip sealing.
Light diesel oil (LDO), also known as distillate fuel or marked oil, is a fuel derived from crude oil. It’s a lighter and cleaner-burning option compared to heavier fuel oils. Primarily used in industrial settings to generate heat and power. Examples include powering boilers, furnaces, and low-rpm engines like generators or irrigation pumps. Compared to heavier fuel oils, LDO offers cleaner burning, reduced emissions, and easier handling.
